FLV stands for Flash Video, .flv is a file format often used to deliver video over the Internet. A .flv file cannot be played without converting on the iPod touch, iPhone (and many other phones) and iPad. You will need to install Perian (see below) in order to be able to convert and play .flv files on Mac OS X or the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.
Just like a .flv file, a.mp4 file is a file format that can be used to deliver video over the Internet. Unlike .flv files, .mp4 files can be directly played on the iPod touch, iPhone (and many other phones) and iPad. You can also directly play this format on Mac OS X.
Perian is a free, open source QuickTime component that adds native support for many popular video formats. You will need to install it if you want to be able to play, extract the audio of and convert .flv files. For more information, visit http://perian.org/.
Simply click the 'Quick Launch' menu in the menu bar of iTubeX and then click 'Configure…'. Follow the steps on the screen to complete the configuration of Quick Launch. You can then click the 'Quick Launch' menu again and select an application or application group to launch it.
Open the converter and select the file you'd like to convert to a .mp4 file. Then, choose 'Movie to MPEG-4' from the 'Export' menu and choose 'LAN/Intranet' from the 'Use' menu. Click the 'Options...' button right next to the 'Export' menu and choose 'CD/DVD-ROM' from the 'Optimized for' menu. Choose 'Current' from the 'Image Size' menu. Click the 'Video Options…' button, and set the encoding mode to either 'Faster encode' or 'Best quality'. Setting the encoding mode to 'Faster encode' will result in shorter conversion times but possibly less quality output. Click the 'OK' button, leave all other settings at what they are and click the 'Audio' tab. Choose '320 kbps' from the 'Data Rate' menu and choose 'Best' from the 'Encoding Quality' menu. Now, click the 'OK' button at the bottom-right of the window. Note that the 'Use' menu is now set to 'Most Recent Settings'. This means that your settings are saved. Now, click the 'Save' button at the bottom-right of the window and the conversion should start.
iTubeX downloads files directly from the server. Slow downloads are caused by the server, not by iTubeX. TIP: in iTubeX 8.0 and later, pausing and resuming a download can increase the download speed.
